Amrita pritam: A pioneer literary

Leepa Chakraborty: Amrita pritam was one of the most popular Punjabi novelist,essayist and poet who wrote both in Punjabi and Hindi. She was born on 31th Aug 1919 at Gunjarwala district in Punjab, Pakistan.

She began to write at a very young age and wrote more than 100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays, a collection of Punjabi folk songs and an autobiography that were translated into several Indian and foreign languages.
Amrita is considered the first eminent female Punjabi writer. Her writing is equally loved by the people of India and Pakistan. Pinjar, Rasidi ticket, The revenue stamp, Kagaj te canvas, ajj Aakhaan waris shah nu etc are very popular books written by her.

She was honored with a number of prestigious award. In 1956 she became the first woman to received the Sahitya Academy Award for one of her poem ‘sunehad’ and in 1969 received padmashree award. She became the first recipient of Punjab Ratna award given by Punjab govt for her contribution of literary world. She also received Bhartiye jnanpith award in 1982 for one of her book Kagaj te canvas.

Her notable works: Pinjar, Ajj aakhaan waris shah nu, suneray(poem).
The movie pinjar, that released on 2003, was based on her novel Pinjar. This movie has received many awards.

Today, on the occasion of Amrita Pritam’s 100 Tam Anniversary, all the scholars and people of the country paid tribute to her with great reverence.
